Nigeria’s former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has refuted allegations of corruption in the $2.7 billion Mambilla power project arbitration, following reports that surfaced earlier this week.
According to a report published by Punch Newspapers on September 22, Malami welcomed Nigeria’s victory in the arbitration dispute and rejected findings of bribery levied against him and other individuals involved in the project.
The Mambilla power project, which was first proposed over four decades ago, aims to boost Nigeria’s electricity supply by constructing a 3,050 megawatt hydroelectric dam in Taraba State.
The dispute between the federal government and China’s Sinohydro Corporation, the original contractor for the project, has been ongoing since 2017. The Nigerian government recently won the arbitration case in London, although details of the ruling have yet to be disclosed.
Malami’s stance on the matter comes amidst increasing scrutiny over corruption and accountability within Nigeria’s public sector. The Mambilla project has been a subject of controversy for several years due to allegations of financial mismanagement, bribery, and political interference.
