Nigeria has been announced as one of 20 African nations eligible to vote in this year’s Ballon d’Or awards. The eligibility is based on Nigeria’s ranking within the top 100 countries in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking, which determines the award’s international jury. According to a report by Vanguard News, this year’s regulations stipulate that only nations appearing in the FIFA rankings published at the time the voting lists were compiled are allowed to participate in the voting process. This development marks an opportunity for Nigeria and other African countries to contribute to the selection of football’s finest players and coaches. This is not the first time Nigeria has been involved in Ballon d’Or voting – in 2022, the country joined the jury for the first time, helping to select Lionel Messi as the award’s recipient. As the voting process for the 2026 Ballon d’Or commences, it will be interesting to see if any African players make a significant impact on the final results.
