Lagos Leads in Generated Revenue as States’ IGR Hits N5.15tn

Lagos State has emerged as the top performer in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) among Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), according to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The total IGR for 2025 reached an impressive N5.15 trillion, representing a 40.93% increase from the N3.65 trillion recorded in 2024.

The financial powerhouse of Lagos generated over N1.77 trillion, significantly surpassing the combined revenue of 22 other states.

This report underscores the widening disparity among states’ capacity to raise domestic revenue and finance public spending. While details regarding individual state performances are yet to be disclosed, it is clear that Lagos continues to lead the pack.

The exact reasons for this notable increase in IGR across Nigeria remain unconfirmed. However, experts attribute this growth to improved economic activities and increased tax compliance efforts by various state governments.
