VP Kashim Shettima: Africa’s Exclusion from UN Security Council Harms Global Governance Legitimacy

In a recent statement, Vice President Kashim Shettima voiced his concern about Africa’s continued exclusion from permanent membership of the United Nations (UN) Security Council. According to Shettima, this exclusion subverts the fairness and legitimacy of global governance. This perspective was shared with journalists during a press briefing in Abuja, Nigeria.

Shettima emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to advocating for reforms that make international institutions more representative, responsive, and credible. His statement comes as Africa, with its 54 member states, continues to be the only continent not represented on the UN Security Council’s permanent membership.

The Vice President’s sentiments were echoed by other African leaders, who have long advocated for fairer representation in global decision-making bodies. Many argue that Africa’s exclusion from the Security Council weakens the organization’s credibility and undermines its ability to address regional conflicts effectively.

This issue has gained significant attention globally, with several countries supporting reform proposals aimed at expanding the Security Council’s permanent membership to include African nations. The debate over Africa’s representation in the UN Security Council remains a crucial topic in international relations and global governance discussions.
