The Allied Peoples Movement (APM), a political party in Nigeria, has called for the resignation of Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, following his recent comparison of petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. According to reports by Vanguard News and Daily Post Nigeria, the APM argues that Okpebholo’s comparison is misleading due to the wide disparity in income and purchasing power between Nigerians and people living in the UK.
The controversy arose when Okpebholo stated during a public event that Nigerian citizens pay nearly 10 times more for petrol than their counterparts in the UK, claiming this was unacceptable. However, the APM contends that Okpebholo’s statement fails to consider factors such as Nigeria’s lower Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and weaker purchasing power compared to the UK.
The call for Okpebholo’s resignation comes amid ongoing discussions about fuel price hikes in Nigeria, with many citizens expressing frustration over high fuel costs. The Nigerian National Petrol Corporation (NNPC) has not said when the facility began operating at the increased rate of N1,500 per liter.
