According to reports from multiple sources, six governorship candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the North-East have united against the appointment of Engr. Babachir Lawal as their regional leader. The candidates issued a joint statement expressing their disapproval, stating that the decision was made without consultation with them or other key stakeholders.
The rejection comes amidst ongoing political tensions in the region and heightened anticipation for the forthcoming elections. Babachir Lawal served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation from 2015 to 2017 before resigning due to allegations of corruption and mismanagement of funds related to the Presidential Initiative on North East (PINE). The former SGF has yet to comment on the candidates’ rejection.
It is worth noting that this development could potentially impact the NDC’s chances in the North-East, as Lawal’s appointment was seen by some as a bid to consolidate support for the party in the region. However, the candidates’ united stance may signal growing dissatisfaction with established political figures and a push for fresh leadership within the NDC.
