In a recent interview with Premium Times Nigeria, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, shed light on the decision to involve Chinese companies in the ongoing revitalization of Nigeria’s troubled refineries. According to him, a nine-month selection process was carried out during which more than 50 potential partners were considered before the list was narrowed down to approximately 20 contenders.
Sylva further explained that the choice was based on factors such as technical capabilities, cost efficiency, and proven track records in similar projects. The minister did not specify when the facility began operating, stating only that it is part of a broader strategy aimed at transforming Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
This move has sparked controversy among some Nigerians who have expressed concerns about the reliance on foreign companies for critical national infrastructure projects. However, Sylva remains optimistic, emphasizing the need to work with capable partners to achieve the desired results in a timely manner.
