Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged President Bola Tinubu’s claims of overcoming the toughest phase of economic reforms and ushering in an era of prosperity. In a statement released on Friday, Abubakar contested that the current administration’s policies have led to rising hardship for many Nigerians. According to Atiku, while he acknowledges the need for structural adjustments, the implementation of these reforms has exacerbated economic challenges rather than alleviating them.
Tinubu made his claims in his Independence Day address on October 1, stating that the reforms were introduced to tackle longstanding economic distortions. However, Atiku argued that the reality on the ground paints a different picture. He cited increasing inflation rates, fuel shortages, and unemployment as evidence of the ongoing hardship faced by Nigerians.
This challenge comes as various media outlets report conflicting figures regarding Nigeria’s economic performance under Tinubu’s administration. While some sources indicate improvements in key sectors such as GDP growth and foreign investment, others point to continued struggles with poverty, inequality, and insecurity.
As the 2027 general elections approach, this debate is likely to intensify, with both Tinubu and Atiku positioning themselves as potential candidates. The contrasting narratives on economic performance will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping voter decisions.
