According to a statement by the Imo State Police Command, the rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with other security agencies. The police spokesperson, SP Mike Abattam, confirmed that the rescue mission led to the recovery of two buses used by the kidnappers. He added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining abductors.
The abduction comes weeks after another highway attack in which corps members were among people abducted by gunmen in Kogi State, raising concerns about the safety of prospective corps members during their journey to camps nationwide. The police have yet to confirm if the two incidents are related.
The police command has advised travellers to be vigilant and avoid travelling at night on lonely highways. It also urged passengers to cooperate with security personnel during checkpoints to ensure a safer journey for all.
