Investigation: Lack of Enforcement of Anti-Flaring Law Leaves Methane Emissions Unchecked

Following a recent investigation by Premium Times Nigeria, it has been revealed that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has failed to enforce the country’s anti-flaring laws effectively. This lack of enforcement has resulted in significant methane emissions going unchecked.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, with global warming potential 28 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. The investigation highlighted several instances where flaring occurred for prolonged periods, without any action being taken by the NUPRC to address the issue.

According to Premium Times Nigeria, the failure to enforce anti-flaring laws is due to insufficient funding and staffing at the regulatory body, as well as weak regulations and a lack of political will to tackle the problem. The investigation also found that the NUPRC has not said when the facility began operating, nor have they provided details about any fines or penalties levied against companies flouting the anti-flaring laws.

This lack of enforcement not only exacerbates Nigeria’s contribution to global warming but also wastes valuable natural gas resources that could be used for power generation and other beneficial purposes. It is a problem that urgently needs attention, as Nigeria continues to grapple with energy shortages and the need to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
