CAN Marks 50th Anniversary: A Call for Politicians to Shun Religious, Ethnic, and Regional Divisiveness

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. In a statement issued on this occasion, CAN warned Nigerian politicians against the dangerous practice of exploiting religious, ethnic, and regional divisions for political gain.

According to Premium Times Nigeria, CAN urged political parties and candidates to resist the temptation to stir up hatred and violence during election periods. The association argued that such tactics have led to bloodshed and division in the past, and urged politicians to instead focus on issues that are important to all Nigerians.

CAN’s call comes at a time when religious and ethnic tensions are high in Nigeria. In recent months, there have been numerous incidents of violence between Christians and Muslims, as well as between different ethnic groups. These conflicts have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and displacement of thousands more.

The danger of politicians exploiting these divisions for political gain is clear. When politicians stoke the flames of hatred and division, it can lead to violence and instability. This is not only dangerous for individuals and communities, but it also threatens the stability and unity of Nigeria as a whole.
