Civil Society Organizations Call for Investigation into TikTok Disruption in Northern Nigeria

On Monday, October 3rd, several civil society organizations (CSOs) expressed their concern over the recent disruption of TikTok in Northern Nigeria. According to Realnews Magazine, the CSOs have called for a comprehensive investigation into the matter. The move follows reports that access to the social media platform has been intermittently blocked since early September. The exact cause of the disruption remains unclear. Despite this, the CSOs argue that such actions infringe on Nigerians’ freedom of expression and should be investigated thoroughly. Nigeria Communications Week also reported the demand for an investigation, adding that the disruption has affected millions of users in the region. It is worth noting that TikTok has become increasingly popular among young Nigerians, with over 10 million active users nationwide. The platform’s disruption could potentially limit their ability to express themselves and share ideas. As this story develops, EventsNigeria will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
