Rotimi Amaechi, the Vice Presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has hinted at plans by an Atiku government to amend the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) should the current legislation hinder implementation of a proposed production subsidy. Speaking in an interview with Premium Times Nigeria on Monday, Amaechi explained that while the PIA is ‘a step in the right direction’, it may not fully accommodate their intended policy.
‘If the law as it stands prevents us from implementing our proposed production subsidy, we will send a bill to the National Assembly for amendment,’ Amaechi said. He did not specify what aspects of the PIA might pose obstacles or what alterations they would seek.
This statement follows recent concerns over the feasibility of the Atiku-led government’s plans for increased oil production and job creation, as well as allegations of corruption within the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). According to Premium Times Nigeria, NNPC has not commented on when the controversial Marginal Fields Facility began operations.
Amaechi’s comments come as political parties gear up for the upcoming 2027 general elections. The ADC, a relatively small party, is yet to win a seat in the National Assembly.
