In a bid to reduce travel costs and improve connectivity within the region, the six governors of the North-east states have launched a regional airline.
The decision was made during the 10th meeting of the North East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) held in Maiduguri on Friday. According to Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, who is also the chairman of NEGF, the counterpart funding for this initiative amounts to ₦10.8 billion.
While details about the airline, such as its name, operational schedule, and fleet, have not been disclosed yet, it is expected that the remaining contributions will be paid before the service commences.
This move follows Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s statement during the same meeting, where he noted significant progress in regional cooperation among North-east governors since 2020. According to Yahaya, collective action has yielded concrete results in infrastructure, energy, connectivity, and economic development across the region.
This development is not only a step towards improved transportation within the North-east but also a demonstration of the commitment of these governors to fostering regional cooperation and development. More details about the airline are expected to be released soon.
