According to reports from THISDAYLIVE and Google News, Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), has criticized the support for petrol subsidy by presidential candidates in the upcoming election. Speaking at the weekend, Lokpobiri called the policy financially unsustainable for Nigeria. The minister’s comments come as both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have pledged to maintain the fuel subsidy if elected. However, Lokpobiri argued that the subsidy is a drain on Nigeria’s resources and cannot be sustained indefinitely. It remains unclear what alternatives Lokpobiri proposes to address the high cost of petrol for Nigerians. As the election approaches, this issue is likely to remain a key point of contention among the candidates.
