According to Sahara Reporters and Punch Newspapers, a senior commander of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), Abdussamad Ohida, was reportedly killed in an intelligence-led operation by joint security forces in Owo forest, Ondo State. The news outlets did not specify when the operation took place or give details about the circumstances surrounding Ohida’s death.
The reports come amid concerns over potential attacks on Southern Nigeria by ISWAP and other militant groups. It is unclear whether Ohida’s death will significantly impact the group’s activities in the region. The Nigerian military has not yet confirmed the killing of the ISWAP leader, and it remains uncertain whether he was indeed a key figure in the organization.
In recent months, there have been increasing tensions between the Nigerian government and various militant groups operating in the country’s northeast. There have been reports of attacks on military bases and civilian populations, as well as kidnappings for ransom and other criminal activities.
