Reps Urge INEC to Disqualify Candidates Not in Submitted Party Registers

In a move aimed at preventing election disputes and litigation, the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify some candidates in the 2027 general elections. According to Premium Times Nigeria and Tribune Online, this follows a judgement by the Supreme Court. The lawmakers believe that diligent enforcement of the provision of the Electoral Act would help prevent disputes and reduce litigation arising from alleged irregularities or non-compliance with Sections 77(4) to 77(6) of the Act. The request is contained in a letter signed by members of the committee on September 30, 2026. The exact number and identities of the candidates affected have not been disclosed. This development comes as Nigeria gears up for its next general elections, scheduled for 2027. As the electoral process unfolds, ensuring fairness, transparency, and compliance with electoral laws will be crucial to maintaining peace and stability in the country.
