The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), according to multiple reports. At a press briefing on fuel prices and subsidy questions in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, made the announcement. While details of the discount and priority eligibility were not immediately clear, reports suggest that public transport operators may receive priority under the arrangement. According to the Punch Newspapers, the discount will be implemented through NNPC filling stations. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) replaced the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on July 1, 2026, following the Petroleum Industry Act’s implementation. The discount announcement comes at a time when petrol prices have been a contentious issue in Nigeria, with many Nigerians struggling to afford the rising cost of fuel. This development is likely to be welcomed by transporters and motorists alike, as it could potentially ease the financial burden of fuel expenses.
