Call for Stronger Military Collaboration in Safeguarding Schools

The National Coordinator of the Safe Schools Initiative, Hajiya Halima Iliya, has urged for a stronger collaboration between the initiative and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to bolster the security of schools nationwide. Iliya made this call during a recent visit to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, in Abuja. According to a report by Vanguard News, the visit aimed to discuss ways to strengthen the partnership between the Safe Schools Initiative and the military to safeguard educational institutions from attacks by non-state actors. Iliya emphasized the need for increased security in schools, citing the numerous instances of attacks on educational facilities in recent years. The Safe Schools Initiative, a non-governmental organization, was established to protect students, teachers, and schools from violence and ensure a safe and conducive learning environment. The call for stronger military collaboration comes at a time when insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions, has resulted in the closure of numerous schools. The increasing number of attacks on schools has raised concerns about the safety of students and teachers, prompting calls for more robust security measures. This collaboration between the Safe Schools Initiative and the military could potentially lead to a more secure educational environment for students across the country. The initiative’s focus on protecting educational institutions from violence aligns with the military’s mandate to maintain peace and security in the country. As such, a closer partnership between the two could provide a much-needed boost to the fight against insecurity in Nigeria’s educational sector.
