Niger Miners’ Deaths: Suspended NSCDC Commandant Admits ‘Costly Mistake’, Apologises

In an exclusive report by THISDAYLIVE, the suspended Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State, Siaka Zubeiru Anirive, has admitted to a ‘costly mistake’ in connection to the deaths of suspected illegal miners in the corps’ custody. According to the report, Anirive expressed his deep regret and apologised for any role his actions may have played in the tragedy. The deaths occurred after the miners were arrested and taken into NSCDC custody for questioning. The exact cause of their death has not been disclosed, but it is believed that they may have suffered from suffocation or other forms of abuse while in custody. This tragedy has sparked a wave of outrage and calls for accountability from various quarters, with many demanding justice for the deceased miners. The Niger State Government has set up a panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and the NSCDC has suspended Anirive pending the outcome of the investigation. This incident underscores the importance of upholding human rights and due process in all law enforcement activities, and highlights the need for continued vigilance and accountability in the security sector.
