Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, in a recent announcement, revealed that a draft of the long-awaited National Policing Bill is currently undergoing legislative review. The bill, which includes 29 consequential amendment bills, is expected to return from the Justice Ministry by October 30, and be transmitted to the President for assent. According to THISDAYLIVE, the proposed bill seeks to establish the constitutional and legislative framework for a dual policing structure, comprising a Federal Police Service and State Police Services. The bill’s submission to the Justice Ministry follows a review by a Presidential panel. It is not yet clear when the Justice Ministry began its review of the bill. Premium Times Nigeria reports that the proposed National Policing Bill aims to address the long-standing calls for the creation of state police in Nigeria. Delta State recently approved an amendment for state police, signaling a growing movement towards devolving policing powers to the states. The bill’s passage would mark a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to reform its security sector.
