The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has sounded the alarm over the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) in manipulating Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to a report by Punch Newspapers, the agency expressed fears that AI-powered misinformation and deepfakes could be employed to sway voters’ decisions. NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Abdullahi, emphasized the need for robust measures to mitigate such threats and ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. With the increasing reliance on technology in political campaigns, the agency urged stakeholders to prioritize cybersecurity to protect the electoral process from manipulation.
