NGO Seeks Accountability for ₦78.8bn Cash Transfer at ECOWAS Court

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken the Nigerian government to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, alleging financial irregularities in the disbursement of over ₦78.8 billion allocated for cash-transfer and social protection programmes intended to benefit vulnerable households. According to reports by Premium Times Nigeria, Vanguard News, and Punch Newspapers, SERAP is seeking a declaration that ‘the government’s failure to ensure the lawful administration of public funds allocated for cash-transfer programmes undermines the enjoyment of the rights protected under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.’ The lawsuit comes as concerns grow over the accountability and transparency of public funds, particularly those earmarked for social welfare. The Nigerian government has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

This story matters to Nigerian readers because it highlights the need for accountability in the management of public funds, particularly those meant for social welfare. The allegations of financial irregularities could have significant implications for vulnerable households who rely on these programmes for their livelihoods.
