Foreign Interests in Nutritionists’ Council Bill Raise Concerns in Abuja

A coalition of civil society organizations and stakeholders in Abuja has expressed concerns over allegations of foreign interests in a bill aimed at regulating the practice of nutritionists in Nigeria. According to The Guardian Nigeria News, the coalition, which includes representatives from the health sector and civil society, raised these concerns during a recent stakeholders’ meeting.
The bill, which is currently before the National Assembly, seeks to establish a council for the regulation and control of the practice of nutritionists in Nigeria. However, the coalition claims that foreign interests, particularly from the United States, are seeking to influence the bill’s content in a way that may not be beneficial to Nigerian interests.
The coalition’s concerns are based on reports that the bill was drafted with the assistance of a US-based nutritionists’ body, and that foreign experts have been invited to provide technical assistance during the bill’s consideration by the National Assembly.
The coalition’s concerns are not without merit, as there have been instances in the past where foreign interests have sought to influence Nigerian legislation in ways that are not always in the best interests of the country. For example, the US has been accused of using its influence to promote policies that favor its own corporations over Nigerian businesses.
It remains unclear how the National Assembly will respond to the coalition’s concerns, or whether it will take steps to ensure that the bill’s content is not unduly influenced by foreign interests. However, given the importance of the nutrition sector to public health in Nigeria, it is essential that the bill is subjected to rigorous scrutiny and debate, and that the voices of Nigerian stakeholders are heard loud and clear.
