According to multiple reports, the Lagos State Government has vowed to take action against unauthorized borehole operators, as the state grapples with water scarcity issues. This was disclosed by the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC), who announced that the state government will seal illegal boreholes and prosecute operators without the required permits. The LSWC made this known in a statement issued on Thursday, October 28th. The corporation stated that it has received several complaints about unauthorized borehole drilling activities, which it claimed are posing a threat to the water supply system in the state. The LSWC further stated that the unauthorized boreholes are a major cause of the water scarcity issues faced by residents in some areas of the state. This latest development comes after the Lagos State Government launched a crackdown on illegal water vendors in the state earlier this month. The government had threatened to prosecute water vendors found selling water without the necessary permits. The Lagos State Government has not said when it will begin sealing the illegal boreholes or when it will start prosecuting the operators, but it is expected that the crackdown will commence soon. This move is aimed at protecting the water supply system in the state and ensuring that residents have access to clean and safe water. According to Premium Times, the Lagos State Water Regulation and Control Authority (LASWARCA) has also been urged to enforce the provisions of the Lagos State Water Law, which forbids the unauthorized drilling of boreholes without a permit from the agency.
