Seplat Energy Strikes Gold with Aku-01 Well Discovery
Nigerian oil firm Seplat Energy Plc has announced the discovery of 157 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas and 19 million barrels of oil at its Aku-01 exploration well, potentially boosting hydrocarbon production and future revenue.

In a significant development for the Nigerian oil industry, Seplat Energy Plc has announced the discovery of an estimated 157 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas and 19 million barrels of oil in place at its Aku-01 exploration well. The discovery, made after the end of September 2026, was disclosed by the company in a statement. According to Tribune Online, the finding was made at the offshore Owowo field, in the shallow waters of the Niger Delta. The discovery could potentially boost hydrocarbon production and future revenue for the company, which has been focusing on expanding its operations in Nigeria. Seplat Energy, a leading independent oil and gas company in Nigeria, is actively engaged in the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas assets in the country. The company’s operations span across the Niger Delta region, where it operates several oil and gas fields. The Aku-01 well is located in the Owowo field, which is operated by Seplat Energy under a Production Sharing Contract with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The NNPC has not said when the facility began operating or provided any details about the discovery. Seplat Energy’s shares have surged since the announcement, reflecting the market’s enthusiasm for the potential of the discovery. This is not the first time Seplat Energy has made significant discoveries in Nigeria. In 2021, the company announced the discovery of 5.2 trillion cubic feet of gas in place at the Otakikpo marginal field in Rivers State. The discovery is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s gas reserves, which are crucial for power generation and industrial development in the country. The discovery at the Aku-01 well comes at a time when the global energy market is grappling with the transition to cleaner energy sources. The discovery could provide a much-needed boost to Nigeria’s economy, which has been struggling with declining oil revenues and a weak currency. The potential of the discovery is significant, but it remains to be seen how it will impact the company’s operations and the Nigerian economy as a whole.
