Women from K-gbara Dere community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State have called for a genuine cleanup of their communities affected by decades of oil pollution.

In a bid to address the devastating effects of decades of oil pollution on their communities, women from K-gbara Dere community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State have called for a genuine cleanup of their environment. According to THISDAYLIVE, the women made this call during a visit to the community by officials of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), an agency set up by the Federal Government to address oil pollution in the Niger Delta region. The women recounted the numerous health issues, loss of agricultural land, and environmental degradation caused by oil spills in their communities, which have been ongoing for decades. They demanded a thorough cleanup and reparation for the damages suffered. The HYPREP officials, in response, promised to carry out an assessment of the extent of the pollution and develop a remediation plan for the affected communities. The Ogoni women’s call for a genuine cleanup of their communities highlights the continued struggle of Niger Delta communities to address the environmental and health issues caused by oil pollution. This issue is of significant importance to Nigerian readers as it affects the livelihoods and wellbeing of many Nigerians living in oil-producing areas.
