Regulatory Constraints and Lack of Financing Hinder Maritime Development in Nigeria, Shipowners Warn

The Nigeria Shipowners Association has raised concerns over regulatory constraints and limited access to affordable financing that are hindering the growth of the maritime industry in Nigeria.

The maritime industry in Nigeria is facing significant challenges, according to the Nigeria Shipowners Association. In a statement, the Association decried regulatory constraints and limited access to affordable financing as the main factors stifling the growth of the sector. This comes as the government has been pushing for the development of the maritime industry as a key driver of the nation’s economy. However, the Association contends that the current regulatory environment is not conducive to the growth of the industry.
The Association also highlighted the lack of access to affordable financing as another major challenge. According to the statement, many shipowners are unable to secure loans due to high interest rates and stringent collateral requirements. This, the Association argued, is hindering the growth of the industry and preventing new entrants from joining the market.
The Association’s warning comes at a time when the government is seeking to attract investment into the maritime sector. The Nigerian Ports Authority has recently announced plans to privatize some of its assets in a bid to attract foreign investment. However, the Association’s concerns highlight the need for a conducive regulatory environment and affordable financing for the industry to thrive.
According to Punch Newspapers, the Association has called on the government to address these challenges in order to unlock the potential of the maritime industry in Nigeria.
