UN and IPCR Warn Against Weaponising Hunger and Misinformation Ahead of 2027 Elections

A United Nations envoy and the Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) have urged stronger measures to prevent election-related violence in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

A United Nations envoy and the Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, have called for stronger measures to prevent the weaponisation of hunger and misinformation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. According to THISDAYLIVE, Ochogwu made this appeal during the opening of a two-day workshop on ‘Countering Violent Extremism and Building Peaceful, Inclusive Societies’ in Abuja.

Citing the increasing trend of weaponising food insecurity to fuel political unrest, Ochogwu emphasised the need for robust mechanisms to address this threat. He also warned against the misuse of social media and other platforms for spreading false information that could potentially incite violence.

This call for peace comes as Nigeria gears up for its next general elections, scheduled for 2027. The elections, which will determine the country’s political direction for the next four years, have the potential to further polarise the nation and potentially lead to election-related violence. According to a report by the Voice of Nigeria, the United Nations and the IPCR have emphasised the need for a peaceful, inclusive, and credible election process.

With the 2027 elections still over a year away, it is crucial for relevant authorities to take proactive measures to address potential threats to peace and security. Preventing the weaponisation of hunger and misinformation will be key to maintaining stability and ensuring a peaceful transition of power.
