Advocacy Group Seeks Dropping of Charges Against Kaduna Journalist

A rights group has called for the withdrawal of charges against a Kaduna-based journalist detained over a Facebook post.

A rights group, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), has called for the withdrawal of charges against a Kaduna-based journalist detained over a Facebook post. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the NUJ made the call following the journalist’s arrest by the Kaduna State Police Command. The journalist, identified only as Mary, was detained over a post she made on Facebook criticizing the state government. The NUJ, in a statement, demanded an independent, impartial and transparent investigation into the alleged detention of her parents, the circumstances of her arrest, the reported demand that she delete her Facebook post and apologize, and the conduct of the officers involved. The call comes as concerns over media freedom and rights of expression continue to mount in Nigeria. The incident underscores the need for the government to respect the freedom of the press, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and various international human rights instruments.
