Abuja Film Industry Stagnates as Funding, Infrastructure Deficits Hinder Growth

According to THISDAYLIVE, Abuja’s ambition to emerge as a major filmmaking hub is being undermined by various challenges. The city’s film industry is facing inadequate infrastructure, opaque funding arrangements, a shortage of skilled technical personnel, and weak government support. This has led to a stagnation in the industry’s growth. Michael Olugbode, reporting for THISDAYLIVE, notes that the industry’s potential is vast, but the lack of resources and support is hindering its progress. The Nigerian film industry, also known as Nollywood, is Africa’s third-largest and the second-largest by volume, but it is yet to fully leverage Abuja’s strategic location and resources. This stagnation is a concern for industry stakeholders, as Abuja has the potential to become a significant player in the Nigerian film industry. The challenges facing the Abuja film industry are not unique, as they are also encountered by other sectors in the city. However, the city’s film industry’s potential makes it a crucial sector for Abuja’s economic development.
