The Anambra State Government has sought the support of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in its ongoing battle against unlicensed and substandard health facilities in the state. This appeal was made during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Physicians Week and Scientific Conference of the Awka Zone of the NMA, which took place in Awka on Sunday. According to Premium Times Nigeria, Adam Obidike, the commissioner for health in Anambra, made the appeal, emphasizing the need for a joint effort to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the people of Anambra.
The commissioner acknowledged the crucial role that the NMA plays in upholding professional and ethical standards in the medical field and expressed hope that the association would collaborate with the government to tackle the issue of illegal health facilities. The proliferation of such facilities, which are often poorly equipped and staffed by unqualified personnel, poses a significant threat to public health and safety.
This development highlights the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to protect the public from the risks associated with substandard health facilities. It remains unclear how the NMA will respond to the Anambra Government’s appeal or when such collaboration might commence.
