Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has escalated his criticism of President Bola Tinubu, describing him as ‘the Egypt Nigerians are desperate to escape’. In a statement released on Wednesday, Abubakar accused Tinubu of worsening the hardships faced by Nigerians through the removal of fuel subsidies. According to Abubakar, the rising transport costs and the increasing cost of basic necessities followed the removal of the subsidy. He argued that Tinubu’s comparison of the relief the subsidy removal would bring to Egyptians escaping poverty was out of touch with the reality faced by many Nigerians. Abubakar is a presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and is running against Tinubu in the upcoming elections. His criticism follows weeks of protests against the subsidy removal and the resulting increase in fuel prices. The Nigerian government has not yet responded to Abubakar’s statements.
