In a challenge to President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the incumbent to demonstrate what he has built with the substantial loans his administration has taken. This request comes amidst growing concerns over Nigeria’s public debt, which now stands at N166.79 trillion.
According to Vanguard News, Atiku believes it is essential for Tinubu to account for the loans already obtained by his administration before seeking additional funds, particularly a reported $1.5 billion from the World Bank.
Atiku’s call for transparency echoes the concerns of many Nigerians who are worried about the government’s increasing reliance on loans to finance its projects.
The exact amount borrowed by the Tinubu administration is not yet clear, but the total public debt has more than doubled since Tinubu took office in 2023. This increase has raised questions about the sustainability of Nigeria’s debt burden and its impact on future generations.
Atiku’s challenge to Tinubu underscores the importance of fiscal responsibility and accountability, particularly when it comes to managing national resources. As the 2027 elections approach, such issues are likely to take center stage in political debates.
