According to Daily Post Nigeria, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga, has raised concerns about Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to restore fuel subsidies. Onanuga, in a reaction to Atiku’s advocacy, suggested that the move could set Nigeria back by 20 years due to its potential negative impact on the economy. This is not the first time such a concern has been expressed about fuel subsidies, as they are often criticized for being financially burdensome and inefficient.
Onanuga, who is a close aide to President Tinubu, noted that Atiku, despite his advocacy, lacks the necessary understanding of economics to effectively implement such a policy. However, it is important to note that this is not an official position of the Presidency and does not necessarily reflect the government’s stance on the matter.
This development comes as the race for the 2027 presidential election heats up, with Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President, and Bola Tinubu, the incumbent President, being key contenders. The debate on fuel subsidies is a significant one in this context, as it touches on critical economic and energy issues that are of great concern to Nigerian voters.
