Avoiding Street Medicine Vendors: Pharmacists’ Warning Amid Counterfeit Threat

In a recent alert, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has cautioned Nigerians against purchasing medication from street vendors due to the escalating issue of counterfeit drugs.

Amidst growing concerns over the proliferation of counterfeit and fake medicines in Nigeria, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to avoid purchasing medication from street vendors. According to the PSN, the increasing threat of counterfeit medicines poses a significant risk to consumers’ health and wellbeing. The warning comes as the Nigerian market grapples with an influx of substandard and counterfeit drugs, often sourced from unregulated channels.

The PSN, the professional body representing pharmacists in Nigeria, has long been advocating for stricter regulations in the pharmaceutical industry to combat this issue. The body’s latest call to action aims to educate the public about the dangers of relying on street vendors for their medication needs.

‘The proliferation of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria is a serious concern for us all. We urge the public to be vigilant and only purchase medication from registered pharmacies,’ said a spokesperson for the PSN. ‘The health risks associated with counterfeit drugs are severe and can lead to serious complications or even death.’

The PSN’s warning serves as a reminder to Nigerians to prioritize their health by only purchasing medication from licensed and regulated pharmacies. The body also emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups and consultations with registered healthcare professionals to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.

The escalating issue of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria is not a new concern, with the Nigeria Customs Service seizing millions of counterfeit drugs each year. The PSN’s latest warning comes as the federal government continues to address the issue through various measures, including increased surveillance, regulation, and enforcement.
