A Borno father, Ali Shaban Hamma, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Federal High Court in Abuja for allegedly providing protection to members of Boko Haram in his community in Borno State. According to Daily Post Nigeria, Hamma, a father of 10 children, pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted by Justice Binta Fatima Nyako. The sentence was handed down on Thursday. Hamma’s case highlights the ongoing struggle against Boko Haram, a terrorist group that has wreaked havoc in northeastern Nigeria for over a decade. While the sentencing of Hamma may not directly address the root causes of the insurgency, it serves as a reminder of the consequences of supporting such violent extremism. This report comes as the Nigerian military continues to battle Boko Haram, with recent successes claimed in Borno and neighboring states. As the country prepares for elections next year, the issue of security will undoubtedly be a major concern for voters.
