Chelle Sets High Expectations for Super Eagles’ AFCON Qualifying Debut

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a double-header against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau this month. According to reports from Premium Times Nigeria and Daily Post Nigeria, the team’s coach, Éric Chelle, has demanded a strong start from his players. The three-time African champions are under pressure to perform well in the qualifiers, having missed out on the 2025 AFCON due to a disappointing performance.

Chelle believes that a strong start is crucial for the team’s confidence and momentum throughout the qualifying campaign. He stressed the importance of determination, discipline, and focus, highlighting Madagascar as a tough opponent that must be respected. The coach also expressed optimism about the team’s potential, citing their talent and experience as key strengths.

The Super Eagles have a history of success in the AFCON, having won the tournament three times (in 1980, 1994, and 2004). However, they have struggled to replicate that form in recent years, with their last major international trophy coming in 2013 at the African Nations Cup.

Chelle’s demand for a strong start reflects the high expectations placed on Nigeria’s national team, both domestically and internationally. A successful qualifying campaign would not only secure the Super Eagles’ place in the AFCON but also boost morale and renew faith in Nigerian football.
