In a significant turn of events, the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a N120 million rights suit filed by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, against the State Security Service (SSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). According to Premium Times Nigeria, Mr El-Rufai had alleged that the respondents violated his rights by seizing his passport and attempting to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja upon his arrival in the country in February. The suit was filed in March 2022. However, Justice Inyang Ekwo, the presiding judge, dismissed the suit for lack of merit, stating that the respondents had acted within their statutory powers. This decision comes amidst ongoing tensions between El-Rufai and various security agencies in Nigeria. While the governor has been vocal about his disagreements with these agencies, this lawsuit marks a significant setback for his efforts to challenge their actions. This development is likely to escalate the ongoing political tension in Kaduna State and may have broader implications for the relationship between governors and security agencies in Nigeria.
