In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court in Jos, Plateau State, has stopped Jonathan Akuns from presenting himself as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election. According to Daily Post Nigeria, Justice S.T. Ishaya issued the order on September 28 after considering an ex parte application filed by Alfred Dapal, a governorship aspirant challenging the party’s nomination process.
The ruling comes as a blow to Akuns’ campaign and raises questions about the validity of his candidacy. The court has not specified when it will hear Dapal’s case in full, but the restraining order means that both INEC and the NDC are barred from recognizing Akuns as their governorship candidate for Plateau State.
This development underscores the importance of fair and transparent nomination processes in Nigeria’s democratic elections. With the 2027 election quickly approaching, it is crucial that all political parties adhere to due process to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants.
