In a collective voice, civil society organizations (CSOs) have identified vote-buying as a significant issue that requires immediate attention ahead of the 2027 general elections. The call was made during the 2026 National CSOs Summit held in Abuja last Friday.
Representatives from various organizations working on democracy and governance issues expressed concern over the prevalence of vote buying, which they believe undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to a report by Vanguard News, these CSOs are urging the Federal Government to take stringent action against vote buying to ensure free and fair elections in 2027.
The exact measures that the CSOs are proposing remain unclear. However, they have emphasized the need for increased transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process.
This demand comes as the Federal Government has recently approved a quarterly policy dialogue aimed at improving Nigeria’s democracy and governance.
The importance of this issue cannot be overstated. Vote buying has been a persistent problem in Nigerian elections, often leading to voter apathy and a lack of trust in the electoral process.
If not addressed, it could undermine the legitimacy of the 2027 elections and further erode public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
