The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized and handed over five tankers carrying suspected diverted diesel to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for further investigation. According to the spokesperson for the NCS’s Operation Whirlwind, Hussaini Abdullahi, the tankers were intercepted in Borno State. The NMDPRA has not said when the facility began operating, but this is not the first time the agency has taken custody of seized petroleum products. This latest incident highlights ongoing issues with fuel diversion and smuggling in Nigeria, which cost the government billions of naira annually. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been stepping up efforts to curb fuel theft, but the problem remains a significant challenge for the Nigerian government. As the country’s economy recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing fuel diversion will be crucial to ensuring stable energy supplies and preventing further economic hardship.
