In a statement to Premium Times Nigeria, the NCDC explained that the allowance was provided due to the exceptional circumstances surrounding the Ebola crisis. Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director-General of the NCDC, said, ‘The affected people had been taken out of their normal environments for public health reasons, making it necessary for the authorities to consider their welfare while ensuring they complied with quarantine measures.’
According to Dr. Ihekweazu, the allowance was not budgeted for in advance, but was a necessary response to the unusual situation. The NCDC has not said when the facility began operating or how many individuals were affected. The clarification comes amidst concerns about the cost of managing the Ebola outbreak and the potential impact on Nigeria’s healthcare system.
