On October 6th, 2026, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) strengthened its bench by swearing in five new judges at a ceremony held in Abuja. The event, reported by Nigeria Abuja and Tribune Online, underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to impartial and credible justice within the region. According to PRNigeria News, the new judges are:
- Mr. Désiré Henri Kouassi
- Professor Amina Oumarou Bouno
- Justice Fitsan Wulleh Giye
- Justice Emmanuel Amadi
- Professor Issa Samba Traore
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, who is the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, charged these judges to uphold justice with integrity and contribute significantly towards strengthening public trust. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice plays a crucial role in interpreting and ensuring compliance with ECOWAS law.
The swearing-in ceremony comes amid growing concerns about the state of justice within the region, particularly in relation to corruption and human rights violations. By reinforcing its judiciary, ECOWAS hopes to address these challenges and promote a more accountable and transparent legal system across West Africa.
