According to Premium Times Nigeria, El Niño could increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke in Nigeria. Here's what you need to know to stay safe.

As the tropical climate of Nigeria heats up due to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, it’s essential to take precautions to stay safe. Speaking with Premium Times Nigeria, Tanimola Akande, a professor of public health at the University of Ilorin, highlighted the risks associated with extreme heat during El Niño periods. ‘Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can become more prevalent in Nigeria during El Niño events’, Professor Akande explained. ‘It’s crucial to take measures to protect yourself and your loved ones.’
According to the World Health Organization, heat-related illnesses can cause severe health complications, and even death, if left untreated. To stay safe during this period, the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) recommends the following precautions:
1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially when working or playing outdoors.
2. Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
3. Wear loose, lightweight, and breathable clothing.
4. Seek air-conditioned environments when possible.
5. Check on friends, family, and neighbors, particularly those who are vulnerable, such as the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
It’s crucial to remember that El Niño’s impact on health risks may vary depending on location. If you live in an area prone to heatwaves, it’s essential to stay informed about local weather conditions and follow any advice from local health authorities.
Staying safe during El Niño is everyone’s responsibility. By taking simple precautions and looking out for each other, we can minimize the risks associated with extreme heat in Nigeria.
