The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that construction of the much-anticipated Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is progressing as planned, dismissing rumors of its abandonment for the East-West Road. According to a report by Vanguard News, the government’s spokesperson said the project is on schedule and that concerns about its progress are unfounded. However, a video posted by Tribune Online, in which Governor Umahi of Ebonyi State explained the decision to divert the coastal highway towards the East-West Road, raises questions about the situation.
In the video, Umahi cited concerns about the condition of the coastal corridor and the need for a lasting solution to challenges affecting the region as reasons for the diversion. This contradicts the Federal Government’s assertion that the project is progressing as planned.
Meanwhile, Ondo coastal communities have raised an alarm over the diversion of the Lagos-Calabar highway route, demanding a probe into the matter, according to a report by Businessday NG. The communities are concerned that the diversion may negatively impact their livelihoods and the environment. It remains unclear whether the Federal Government will address these concerns.
