The Acceptable Sacrifice: Femi Aribisala’s Reflections on God’s Demands

Nigerian author and columnist Femi Aribisala delves into the complex issue of divine sacrifice in his latest op-ed, published by Premium Times Nigeria. In the third installment of his series, titled ‘The Acceptable Sacrifice’, Aribisala draws on the Tabernacle as described in the Old Testament to illustrate the concept of sacrifice in relation to God’s demands.

According to Aribisala, the inner court of the Tabernacle was reserved for consecrated priests, descendants of Aaron, to perform sacrifices. The Holy of Holies, where the Ark of the Covenant was placed, was a sacred space within the Temple that was off-limits, a no-go area. This, Aribisala suggests, is a powerful metaphor for the idea that God requires a broken spirit from His followers.

‘The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.’ (Psalm 51:17, KJV)

Aribisala’s reflections on the acceptable sacrifice come at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with the question of what it means to serve God in the modern world. As the country navigates complex political, social, and economic challenges, Aribisala’s insights offer a timely reminder of the importance of humility and obedience in the face of divine authority.
