The federal government has advocated for collaboration among African nations to pool their Artificial Intelligence (AI) computing capacity. Speaking on the issue, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Abdullahi Tijani, identified electricity and connectivity as key constraints to AI development in Nigeria. According to a report by THISDAYLIVE, Tijani’s remarks were made at the 2026 Nigeria AI Summit in Abuja. The report also stated that Nigeria’s dependence on cloud infrastructure amounts to $850 million. This call for collaboration comes as African and Russian universities are being urged to focus on engineering education, according to a statement by the Vice-Chancellor of Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), Professor Francisca Oladipo. She made this call at the Academic Session for Russian and African Rectors held at Saint Petersburg Mining University, Russia. The need for such collaboration is crucial, as the global race for AI dominance intensifies, and African nations strive to keep pace with the technological advancements.
