The Nigerian government has responded to the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa by evacuating 114 more Nigerian citizens. According to Vanguard News, this latest operation brings the total number of Nigerians evacuated since June 10, 2026 to 2,151. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, strongly condemned the attacks and promised to continue working with the South African authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of Nigerians in the country. The evacuation, which is the 16th consular operation since the exercise began, involved the use of chartered flights to transport the Nigerians back to Nigeria. The South African government has been under international pressure to address the xenophobic violence, which has resulted in the death and displacement of many foreign nationals, including Nigerians. This latest evacuation is a testament to the Nigerian government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. As the number of Nigerians evacuated continues to rise, the government is hopeful that the situation will improve and that the safety and security of Nigerians in South Africa will be guaranteed.
