The Federal Government is set to showcase its ambitious one-million-hectare tree crops expansion programme to European cocoa industry leaders and investors in Brussels, according to a report by Tribune Online. The presentation will take place at the Nigeria/West Africa Cocoa Origins–EU Industry Match-Making Forum, organized on the 4th of November. The aim is to attract investment and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global cocoa market. This move follows the federal government’s commitment to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on crude oil.
Nigeria is Africa’s largest cocoa producer, but the industry has been plagued by challenges such as aging farms, low productivity, and a lack of investment. The government’s new programme aims to address these issues by expanding tree crops across one million hectares of land, potentially increasing productivity and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
According to Tribune Online, the event will provide an opportunity for Nigerian cocoa farmers and processors to engage with potential investors and industry leaders, fostering partnerships that could help drive growth and development in the sector. The government has not yet confirmed when the facility began operating or provided details on the specific types of tree crops that will be included in the programme.
